Tondoon Botanic Gardens - Japanese Garden and Tea House
Amongst the many picnic sites that the city and surrounding areas offer, Gladstone’s Regional Tondoon Botanic Gardens is of the highest quality. The Japanese Garden was built by the Gladstone City Council and designed by Nick Alderson. The garden is yet to be finished.

About half an hours drive south on the Bruce Hwy from the property in the hinterland of Boyne Island and Tannum Sands lies Lake Awoonga. The extensive area of the lake and its foreshores are blessed by some of the most powerful scenery in the district which for some 20 years has attracted locals and visitors to the stunning lakeside picnic areas. In more recent times, the reputation of the lake has grown as it has become a mecca for Barramundi fishing.

Approximately a further 25km to the south, the twin townships of Boyne Island and Tannum Sands provide a wealth of beach and bush recreational opportunities linked by an extensive bikeway system. The celebrated Milenium Esplanade and the Canoe Point Botanic Parkland are outstanding family beachside recreation locations with excellent BBQ facilities.
